After updating to Hardy I got a white screen of death upon rebooting. After some research it turned out that this was more of an Nvidia driver issue rather then Ubuntu. This may not have been the most correct way to fix it, but it worked for me.
- Completely remove nvidia-glx-new
- Remove nvidia-kernel-common (this also removes linux-restricted-modules), (I am not sure if step 2 is required)
- install build-essentials
- Download the Nvidia beta driver that came out on April 10. You can get it here
- hit ctrl + alt + f1 to break out of gnome
- "sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop" to shutdown the X server
- sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.08-pkg1.run to install the driver. If it asks you to update you're xorg.conf file, let it.
- Reboot. ("sudo reboot") You should now be able to enable Desktop effects. YAY FISH!
Note: I have a Dell XPS M1530

Thank you very much Tim, I went crazy for two days with that damned glx-new..I linked your page in Ubuntu's Italian Forum where many people still have the same problem.
Thank you again, and sorry for my english..goodbye
Matteo.
Glad it helped Matteo
Tim, you are da man! I just got an Inspiron 1720 with a GeForce Go 8400. Everything looked fine (I fresh installed Kubuntu Hardy Heron and had no intention of using any desktop effects on KDE 3.5.) But when I went to try DVD playback, it was stuttering something awful!
This was surprising to me since Ubuntu/Kubuntu always seemed to configure the video card optimally at install for just about any PPC or x86 machine I had ever installed it on. A quick Google search lead me to the Ubuntu forums and then over to your post.
You rock and this is just another example of what makes the FOSS community so awesome. Even if we are using non-free drivers in this case! :-)
Now off to figure out how to make the Dell Wireless 1395 802.11g Mini Card work. It worked fine with Vista for the five minutes I used it, but Kubuntu is not even turning it on. Luckily my old Linksys USB 802.11g adapter is working fine in the meantime.
thanks for your great tutorial!!
But i've a problem:
I'm using ubuntu 8.04 and after installation process my resolution desktop is available from 640x480 until 1440x900, but the native resolution of my LCD panel is 1680x1050 (Vostro 1500).
So, how i can set this resolution?
Thanks a lot
Kind Regards

Too much thanks Tim !!!!
You helped me very much...
Clair steps and good explained...
I followed all the steps including the installation of build-essential but installing the driver still gives the kernel issue.
using ubuntu 8.04 and NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-173.14.05-pkg2.run
kindly help
There are a lot of sites out there showing book video. BookVideoTV, BookTelevision and of course CSPAN, but I like how BN.com and Reader's Entertainment TV have specific genre channels and original shows. There's just more to see and I can be specific in what genre I'm interested in. Anyone else watch online tv?
